Typography design 101: a guide to rules and terms

design letters

Simply input your text into the tool, choose your desired style, and copy the transformed text. Then, head to your social media platform and paste the styled text into your post, bio, or comment. However, always preview your post to ensure the font displays as intended. They're ideal for enhancing website designs, sprucing up social media posts, or making attention-grabbing graphics.

This should go without saying, but typefaces like these get submitted (usually unsuccessfully) to foundries fairly regularly. Designing a sans-serif typeface is often more challenging for beginners because the features that distinguish such typefaces are much more subtle. Meanwhile, if you're a more advanced type designer, you might want to explore the world of variable fonts.

Lettering Styles Overview

A little trick about sketching is to always start with the skeleton of the letters and add weights after. You’ll have a solid foundation to build on so you’ll be able to concentrate on the very construction of the letters. Tweak them however you please, and get to some really crazy, funky looking letters. Guidelines are very important in the process of drawing letters.

They can also be applied to digital marketing materials such as banners, ads, and email campaigns. For offline use, consider them for printed items like invitations, business cards, posters, and any other material where distinct typography can make a statement. Ensure that your platform or medium supports the custom font styles for optimal results.

Font vs. typeface

Script letters imitate handwritten and calligraphic styles and they can be anywhere from sleek and formal to messy and effortless. Sans serif typefaces became popular in the 20th century, and they also had a calligraphic influence, so we call them Humanist as well. We can observe a slight weight variation and an overall warm vibe. Also, try to not only draw the word in a certain style, but use objects to represent it. For example, you might build the word ‘bones’ from little letter shaped bones or draw actual melting letters for the word ‘melt’. At times, you’ll want to fill the empty space around your letters.

design letters

When used in the right way—a proper combination of style, size, hierarchy, kerning and line spacing—there’s nothing you cannot express with it. From formal and elegant pages to dynamic and mind-bending compositions, you can do whatever your imagination can come up with. Hierarchy helps us in creating visual interest and in guiding the viewer’s eyes across the page, making the process of absorbing text a lot easier and intuitive. The most obvious and easy way we can create some hierarchy is have our information written in different sizes. Analyze your letters and apply the tracking method that best suits the purpose. Also, keep in mind that just because optical kerning will work fine for a certain typeface, doesn’t mean it will be the best choice in all situations.

design letters

Practice by trying to illustrate random words with the help of letters. Pick your word and think about what feelings can that word evoke. Write a list with everything that comes to your mind when you think about the given word.

The power of typography

The word 'adhesion' is often used as an example to test a font design's basic proportions. Fonts have many uses and designing your own can be a long journey. It's wise to start out with a clear vision of what your font's purpose will be in order to provide some focus. You might begin with something purely as a form of self-expression, but the usual practice in font design is to create a typeface in response to a brief. Your brief should make it clear what your font needs to achieve and how it will be used. Graphic design spans many areas, and each designer will have their strengths in particular facets of the design world.

You can also play around with a brush pen or different nibs to get the feel of the stroke so that you’ll know what you have to imitate. The ascender line shows how long the ascender of a lowercase letter should be (like l, h, b). The x-height is the height of a lowercase letter and the line that holds the crossbar. The descender line shows how long the descender of a lowercase letter should be (like p, j, g). Make a statement with our font typer that captivates at first glance.

Although hand lettering often imitates calligraphy, the process behind the two is very different. Because the style is so strong, Gothic lettering works well when paired with other styles like sans serif. It’s an appropriate choice for signage, apparel, branding, posters, and more. One of the most common uses of Gothic lettering is in tattoo designs. These initial characters are often called 'control characters' since they serve to control the design. In a lowercase Latin typeface, they would be the 'n' and o, and in the uppercase, 'H' and 'O' are often used.

Some, such as the two-year-old Wonder of the Seas, have added features that appeal to luxury-loving travelers. Other Royal Caribbean ships operate on particularly low-cost itineraries that are best for budget travelers.

Insider's Tips On Getting from Houston to the Galveston Port

Port of Galveston (official parking)

I had never cruised out of Galveston, but when I found a cheap, five-night Western Caribbean sailing on Voyager of the Seas, I decided to give it a try. My dad joined me on this cruise - he was also curious to see what it was like to sail from Galveston since he had never been either. In that case, just like with dropping off, there are two different areas for pick-up. There is also a second spot to drop passengers and luggage if you simply follow Royal Caribbean Way around the right side of the terminal. There you’ll find a loop that allows you to drop off and then head back toward the exit of the terminal area. In this case, you’ll enter the terminal area at the intersection of Harborside and 14th Street/Royal Caribbean Way.

Where is the Port of Galveston?

Then, you can follow Royal Caribbean Way to Royal Caribbean Circle (and just follow the signage to the terminal). This will lead you right to the front of the terminal where you will see the large area for luggage drop-off. Or maybe you just want to unload those heavy suitcases before you park. This art installation of a band composed of a pelican, sea turtle, and crab is a great spot to grab a quick photo before you start your cruise. The first thing that you’ll notice is the large blue faΓ§ade with the massive Royal Caribbean logo sitting proudly at the center.

Guests can enjoy luxurious pools, an exhilarating water park, and a tranquil spa. The ship also features diverse lounges, bars, and entertainment venues to suit every mood and preference. Entertainment aboard the Mariner of the Seas is diverse and engaging. Enjoy spectacular Broadway-style shows, live music, comedy acts, and a lively casino. The ship’s daily activity schedule is packed with fun and exciting options for guests of all ages.

Booking and Planning Your Cruise

Not long after getting in the Lyft, both my dad and I got a notification on our phones that we could start the mandatory safety briefing. I highly recommend you watch the safety briefing video as soon as it is available to you so you don’t have to do it once onboard. As I suspected, it wasn’t a problem at all to get a rideshare from our Houston hotel to Galveston. At 10 a.m., I requested a Lyft and we were picked up within 15 minutes. Royal Caribbean does offer a shuttle from the HOU airport to Galveston, but this didn't make sense for us since we were not going to the port directly after arriving at the airport. We also didn’t want to wait around for others; we wanted to leave on our own schedule.

Once Adventure of the Seas departs Galveston in spring 2023, Voyager of the Seas will begin offering the same 4 and 5-night itineraries in the Western Caribbean. Because the prices of taxis are higher, we recommend using a rideshare service first. If you are traveling with large suitcases or have more than four passengers, you’ll want to book a Lyft XL. These are larger vehicles that can better accommodate luggage and higher numbers of passengers. The cost will be a bit higher for this service than a regular-sized vehicle.

And dishes so far out of the box they’ll have you questioning reality at Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine. After the porters took our big luggage, we were unsure of where to check-in. There was a sign for The Key and Suites/Pinnacle guests, but not one for everybody else.

For the rest of 2023, Voyager of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas will sail out of Galveston. There will be a few ships cruising out of Galveston in 2024, including Jewel of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas. Harmony of the Seas is equipped with an array of amenities and facilities designed for entertainment, relaxation, and adventure.

However, this is typically not going to be the most convenient nor cost effective option, especially if you’re unable to secure a one-way car rental and have to pay to park the car for a week. Some passengers may look into renting a car from the airport in Houston and driving to the Port of Galveston themselves. While booking through the cruise line can be convenient, you’ll find a better shuttle price through independently operated shuttle companies in Galveston. Expect to pay between $50-60 one-way when traveling from Houston Hobby airport to the Port of Galveston and $ one-way when traveling from George Bush Intercontinental airport to the port.

These shuttles almost always charge a higher cost for the first passenger, but a much smaller fee for each additional person. Adventure of the Seas will be offering shorter cruises from Galveston, with 4-night and 5-night Western Caribbean cruise itineraries. If you arrive earlier in the day, however, we recommend traveling to Galveston the day before your cruise and spending the night there instead. This ensures you are already at the cruise port and will not have to travel the morning of your cruise. We always recommend arriving at the cruise port the day before your cruise begins. Unexpected delays and airline cancellations are all too common, so planning to arrive a day ahead of time gives you more wiggle room in case of any mishaps.

Guests can enjoy Broadway-caliber shows, live music performances, comedy acts, and a vibrant casino. The ship’s daily schedule is filled with activities and interactive experiences, ensuring endless fun and engagement for all passengers. The Mariner of the Seas is equipped with an array of amenities and facilities that promise enjoyment and relaxation. Luxurious pools, an exciting water park, and a tranquil spa area offer something for everyone. The ship also boasts various lounges, bars, and entertainment venues that cater to all tastes and preferences. A number of independent shuttles have popped up in recent years, usually offering a less expensive way to the port if traveling with a larger group.

Matt started Royal Caribbean Blog in 2010 as a place to share his passion for all things Royal Caribbean with readers. He oversees all the writers at Royal Caribbean Blog, and writes a great deal of content on a daily basis. He has become one of the foremost expert on a Royal Caribbean cruise. The Port of Galveston is running a special for parking at the port during the month of November. There are agents lined up to check you in by scanning your SetSail pass.

We asked one of the employees about where to go and they pointed us in the right direction. However, an independent shuttle is an option for those traveling with a larger group because the fare is usually cheaper with more people traveling. If you have the choice between these two airports, try to fly into William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) because it will be quicker and cheaper to get to the Galveston port. This is unless you are able to find a flight from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) that is significantly cheaper.
